In 2002, to prevent the limestone burner’s trade being forgotten, a piece of woodland in Unterkohlstätten was set aside for construction of an authentic lime kiln. The lime kiln is easily reached from the villages of Ober- and Unterkohlstätten (simply follow the signs). Every two years the lime kiln in Unterkohlstätten is fired up and quicklime produced by a laborious process taking several days.
The displays here explain how people previously produced the coveted quicklime from natural stone using simple tools and chemical processes. Nowadays the lime kiln is operated as part of the Kalkbrennerwochen, or Limestone Burners’ Weeks. This is when the lime kiln is fired up. Experience the whole process at first hand, from stoking the kiln to quenching the lime!
