The beautiful village of Forchtenstein is at an altitude of 300-746 metres above sea level. The best view of the village and surrounding area is from the peak of the Rosaliengebirge. There is a fantastic chapel with a Baroque high altar there. Visitors will find well-prepared and signposted hiking, walking and mountain bike trails in and around Forchtenstein.
Must-sees include Forchtenstein Castle, the parish church with the Sancta Scala, or Holy Stairs, the three crosses on the Calvary, the lime kiln, the Rosalienkapelle chapel and the “Maria Danksagung” chapel, which is directly on the pilgrims’ trail, as well as the bathing reservoir and reptile zoo.
The village holds lots of festivals and celebrations, the most famous being the chestnut festival in front of the castle (second Sunday in October) and the Christmas market at the end of November, which is held within the castle precincts.
