Kittsee
APRICOT VILLAGE

The historic village in the north of Burgenland sits on the border with Slovakia. The oldest part of the village, which grew up around a green, centres on the main square and what is known as the Schanze, a defensive fieldwork. There were once major battles here between the Romans and the Germanic hordes of the Quadi and Marcomanni.

In the heart of Kittsee is the Baroque castle, built at the start of the 17th century, which owes its current appearance to remodelling by Paul, Prince Esterházy, in the 18th century.
