Bildein, the “village without frontiers” today stands for openness, receptiveness and tolerance. It has had a lively history, however, because of its position on the border with Hungary. The Frontier Experience Walk is a hiking trail for young and old. You will hike to the Austro-Hungarian border, cross the river Pinka and then walk back on the opposite river bank, passing a number of impressive sights along the way (maze, Second World War bunker, trench, frontier bridge, border watch tower, Games without Frontiers children’s play area, pontoon bridge, etc.). The Frontier Walk is a very special experience.
Whilst its different points draw attention to the history of and life on the border, it sometimes makes visitors think about their own limits. Set in the beautiful Pinka valley, the two-hour hike provides interesting information about all kinds of frontiers. The interactive information points highlight the historic and cultural realities, and those imposed by the landscape. The Frontier Experience Walk starts from Bildein village square, where the Burgenländische Geschichte(n)haus, or Burgenland House of History stands.
