Water sports & swimming
There is a wealth of options in Burgenland for those who enjoy an active lifestyle, whether it’s cycling, horse riding or hiking. Many sports can be enjoyed almost all the year round in the mild Pannonian climate. This is holidaying in Austria’s Sunshine Country - this is a holiday in Burgenland.
There are some 2,500 kilometres of cycle routes for cycling enthusiasts, from an easy circular route for a gentle family bike ride, to challenging mountain bike trails. The 138-kilometre long Lake Neusiedl Cycle Route is very popular and has recently linked up with the Danube Cycle Route through the “Entdecker Tour” or Discoverer Tour. Mountain bikers can hurtle down steep sections on the Rosalia, Geschriebenstein and Eisenberg hills. And e-bike tours are just as popular in Burgenland as trolley tours or quad bike and Segway rides.
Fans of hiking, jogging and walking will enjoy a perfect holiday in the Bad Tatzmannsdorf jogging and walking arena, the Lake Neusiedl Nordic Walking Panorama Park, the Stegersbach Exercise Arena and the Seewinkel-Heideboden jogging and walking arena. The many long-distance hiking trails, such as the “alpannonia” high altitude panoramic trail which starts at Semmering on the edge of the Hungarian lowlands, also offer memorable experiences.
Enjoyment for horse riders, golfers and sailors
There are 1,500 kilometres of pony trekking trails to take riders through the countryside. Dozens of riding stables, inns and farms geared to riding holidays, optional GPS-assisted tour planning, with free equipment hire and “Burgenland im Galopp” member establishments make the state Austria’s biggest and most attractive equestrian region.
Above all golfers love Burgenland for its mild climate. It means they can tee off almost all year round on Burgenland's courses at Donnerskirchen, Lutzmannsburg, Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Stegersbach and Loipersdorf. There are opportunities for sport on lake Neusiedl 365 days a year too. In the summer months it is one of Europe’s most popular sailing and surfing areas, whilst in winter it is paradise for ice skaters and ice yachters. The lake’s reed bed, the Raab and Leitha Rivers and the meanders in the Lafnitz are perfect for boating.
Many villages and numerous hotels have their own tennis courts. And football is very important in Burgenland - the state is the main sponsor of the Austrian national team and the Best of Football association brings top international clubs to the region for training camps.
