Water buffalo

A powerful presence in the Pannonian lowlands

The impressive sight of steam emerging from the nostrils of these animals in the morning mist surprises some visitors. When you think of water buffalos, it’s usually the African or Asian steppes that come to mind, but a few of the gentle giants can be found in the Burgenland steppe.

At Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, old domesticated breeds, such as the domestic water buffalo, are successfully being preserved.

As a valuable part of the cultural heritage, the animals play an important role in grazing. Extensive management of the meadows is necessary for the conservation of the breeding areas of numerous bird species.
