There are some 30 species of fish in lake Neusiedl, central Europe’s biggest steppe lake. Some of the familiar edible species include pike, pike perch, wild carp and European catfish. Other native fish include stickleback, bleak, white bream, common bream and chub.

Lake Neusiedl is also home to several species of fish that originated in other waters and which were brought to the lake by man.

This includes the eel, a coveted edible fish, as well as the Prussian carp and the sunfish, neither of which are native species. The lake also contains stone loach, common whitefish, Crucian carp, belica or moderlieschen, rudd, loach and tench.

The region’s restaurants are waiting to tempt you with unique delicacies from lake Neusiedl.
