Donnerskirchen
CHARMING, UNSPOILED WINE VILLAGE

Donnerskirchen, a welcoming wine village in the Kirschblüten region, nestles between the Leithagebirge hills and lake Neusiedl. The gentle, wooded slopes of the Leithagebirge offer protection from rough weather; the Pannonian microclimate and the massive body of water that is lake Neusiedl, which acts as a natural heat regulator, help the grapes to ripen - this little area combines everything that makes Burgenland a wine-grower’s paradise.

The symbol of Donnerskirchen, the Martinskirche church, looks over the village. There is a fantastic view of lake Neusiedl from up by the church. The Leithagebirge’s slopes are transformed into a sea of pink and white when the cherry trees are in bloom in spring. The 32-km long Kirschblüten (Cherry Blossom) cycle route and hiking trail runs through the tranquil scenery, past lovely cellar-lined streets, through vineyards and along lake Neusiedl’s reed beds. If you like hiking, a hike to the Kaisereiche, with its lookout tower, is worth bearing in mind. When it’s cherry picking time, Donnerskirchen celebrates with the “Kirschen-Cocktail” festival, which is becoming a tradition.

The nice outdoor pool (40-metre long slide) provides great water-based entertainment for the whole family.

There is also a tennis court, a pitch and putt course and a beach volleyball court next to the open-air pool.

Donnerskirchen is home to one of Europe’s prettiest golf courses. The course is playable almost all year round thanks to the very mild climate. Even absolute novices can learn a bit about this great sport, in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, on one of the taster courses.

A boat excursion (Wulka safari) through the reed beds that are otherwise inaccessible to visitors, accompanied by a local biologist, is the perfect way to learn lots of interesting information about lake Neusiedl and its inhabitants. It also gives you the opportunity to learn at first hand about this unique habitat.

Donnerskirchen is a traditional village with a high standard of quality hospitality - good home cooking to gourmet experiences, wine tastings in the producer’s cellar or at a roadside tavern. There is something to suit every taste and pocket.
