The St. Margarethen quarry is one of the largest and oldest quarries in Europe. The valuable St. Margarethener limestone sandstone has been used since ancient times. It is still being extracted today and has been used, among other things, in the restoration of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and in the construction of many buildings along the Vienna Ring Road. This giant from prehistoric times has revealed numerous significant fossils (some up to 25 million years old) in the 20th century. Since 2001, the St. Margarethen quarry, together with the Fertö-Neusiedler See region, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The tour makes the million-year-old history of the quarry excitingly tangible!
