ABOUT THE CONCERT
It has been 30 years since enthusiastic musicians came together in Linz to form an orchestra that quickly became one of the most prominent voices of early music – the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra. Orchestra founder and conductor Michi Gaigg has developed an incredibly colorful, individual, and sonorous signature with her L’Orfeo, with dedication and temperament. In her final season, Johann Sebastian Bach will be prominently featured. With four of the total "six concerts with several instruments," a "Bachian Utopia" will be crafted in Raiding: for such innovation and challenging virtuosity was what Bach demanded of his musicians. The history of the Brandenburg Concertos begins in 1721. At that time, Bach was court chapel master in Köthen and was contemplating a career change, which is why we can understand his manuscript, dedicated to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg, as a kind of application letter, as he maintained a high-caliber court orchestra. Whether the margrave ever noticed or, let alone appreciated, the compositions is not documented. Until 1850, the six were slumbering unused in the count's library; only in the 20th century did they rise to become a world hit of classical music.
