The parish and pilgrimage church "Maria Himmelfahrt", which was consecrated for the first time in 1347, is located in the middle of Forchtenstein. Monks of the Servite order have pastored the parish for almost 300 years from the imposing monastery, which is attached to the parish church. The showpiece of the high altar is the Gothic statue of Mary with the Child. According to reports, this statue has always survived fires and other suffering intact.

A special feature, unique because of its size, is the Holy Staircase, located on the north side of the church. It measures over 20 meters in length and is a replica of the 28 steps that Jesus took when he was condemned by Pilate. The relic of a small piece of the "Berlin Wall" is also considered unique in front of the stairway to the Holy Stairs. Numerous pilgrims are attracted to this place throughout the year to pray up the Holy Stairs kneeling or standing.

The Holy Staircase is open to the public all year round and can be visited at any time!
