Peter Turrini prudently rewrote Carlo Goldoni's famous play in 2007: funny and critical, spicy and poetic, raunchy and tender. In the process, the Austrian poet has helped the classic commedia characters around Arlecchino (Goldoni called him Truffaldino) to develop distinctive profiles and has taken aim at the pillars of society with great accuracy. Behind the mask of Pantalone, the corrupt transport entrepreneur Sansuga Sacchi emerges: a showcase role for artistic director Wolfgang Böck. Director Beverly Blankenship will stage the sensual and morbid events surrounding the dark Venetian canals in an imaginative and entertaining way.
