ABOUT THE CONCERT
An extraordinary event - Martin Ivanov performs all 19 Rhapsodies by Franz Liszt in one evening - a cycle that can only be experienced at the Liszt Festival Raiding. Franz Liszt was described by his contemporary Heinrich Heine as "not a quiet pianist for calm citizens and cozy sleepyheads." The "Hungarian Rhapsodies" are among the most distinctive and virtuosic works of his piano repertoire, and no other composition than THE "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2," his most popular piano piece alongside the "Liebestraum," has shaped the image of Liszt more strongly than this. The rhapsodies unite powerful melodies, improvisationally sounding passages, and dynamic contrasts. Each develops its own dramaturgy - from passionate intensity to poetic reflection to tension-filled drama, starting slowly ("Lassan") and steadily building to the virtuosic, fast section ("Friska"). Here, the pianist must show what he can do - from double octaves at triple forte to cadences in breathtaking presto. The pianist Martin Ivanov, born in Bulgaria, can do this - and convinces with breathtaking virtuosity, paired with musical depth and an extraordinary range of expression. All 19 rhapsodies: "a piano marathon that combines the highest pianistic skill, artistic intensity, and programmatic uniqueness in almost superhuman measure."
