Leithaberger Cherry Culinary Region (Genussregion Leithaberger Edelkirsche)

The deep red treasure on the slopes of Lake Neusiedl

Since the 18th century, cherries have been grown on the slopes of the Leitha Mountains, which gently lead down to Lake Neusiedl - always in mixed cultivation with vineyards.

The lake retains heat, creating ideal conditions for the delicious varieties that thrive here. These include rare varieties and regional specialties such as the “Breitenbrunner Bolaga”, the “Donnerskirchner Blaukirsche”, the “Purbacher Frühbraune”, the “Purbacher Hängerte”, the “Joiser Schachl”, the “Windener Schwarze”, the “Purbacher Spätbraune”, and the “Joiser Schwarze Einsiedekirsche”. The preservation of these old cherry trees is particularly important to the producers in the “Genussregion Leithaberger Edelkirsche” association. They harvest by hand and process the exquisite fruit into authentic fruit spreads, cherry balsamic vinegar, cherry bread, and cherry juice.

In springtime, between early and mid-April, depending on the weather, the area around the towns of Purbach, Winden, Jois, Breitenbrunn, and Donnerskirchen becomes a sea of white cherry blossoms. The wonderful cultural landscape makes for a fantastic hike or cycling experience. Once the fruit is ripe, cyclists and hikers can snack on the cherries from trees on public grounds. Throughout June, restaurant and catering businesses spoil you with delicious variations of the juicy delicacy as part of “Kirschenzauber am Neusiedler See”, with markets offering a wide variety of fruits and cherry products. Individual stalls by the sides of main roads are particularly popular. You can not only taste seasonal fruit and vegetables, but also regional products such as juices or schnapps. It’s well worth stopping by, the freshly picked cherries taste even better without long transport routes.

Experience the culinary diversity of the Edelkirsche and indulge in heavenly fruity pleasure!
