Death intensely preoccupied people in the Baroque era even during their lifetimes. The thought of Memento Mori – Remember that you must die – was ever-present. Lavish funerals became increasingly important. Mourning scaffolds were at the center of noble burials. The skull of Joseph Haydn, who died in 1809, only found rest in 1954 with the rest of his body in the coffin. Where had it been until then?
