The filmmaker Julia Benczak addresses the impact of mental illnesses on families and relatives in her short film "Best Dad, Sometimes." A topic that affects many people yet often remains hidden.
At the center is the family of Jakob (Michael Steinocher), whose bipolar disorder increasingly disturbs family life. While his wife Jenny (Miriam Fussenegger) tries to maintain daily routines, the eight-year-old Mira (Clara Lackner-Zinner) takes on responsibilities that a child should not have to bear. The film sensitively portrays the burdens that often occur behind closed doors, the relatives who bear and support, and the importance of accepting help before people reach their limits.
Following the screening at the Old Cinema Mörbisch, director Julia Benczak and actress Miriam Fussenegger will discuss the making of the film and why art can sometimes create access to topics for which we lack words in everyday life. The evening will be moderated by Viennese curator and cultural worker Djamila Grandits, who has been accompanying film and discourse formats at the intersection of art, society, and politics for many years.
Along with representatives from HPE Burgenland (Angelika Klug), the Burgenland Psychotherapists Association (Anja Niederreiter), and other guests, there will be a discussion afterward. What can art make visible? Where are its possibilities and where are its limits? And how can films, personal stories, and public dialogue contribute to earlier recognition of mental burdens, visibility for relatives, and encourage people to find the courage to accept support?
The conversation is not limited to the podium. The audience is invited to ask questions, share experiences, and become part of the discussion. For often, change begins where people listen to each other.
