Weihnachten im Barock

10.12.2026

Lecture by Mag. Elke Ferderbar
When "Kathrein" locked away the violin on November 25th, the quiet time began in earlier centuries. Advent was a strict fasting period. The fasting did not end until Christmas Eve after the Christmas mass. St. Nicholas brought gifts already on December 6th: apples, nuts, and perhaps even a gingerbread. Christmas trees were not known in the Baroque period and beyond the death of Joseph Haydn.
