The Lockenhaus Castle in central Burgenland was built around 1200 and originally served as a protective fortress against attacks from the east. It was first documented in 1242 under the name "Leuca". Over the centuries, it has been owned by several noble families, including the Counts of Güssing, the Kanizsay, and the Esterházy.
Since 1968, the castle has been owned by the Prof. Paul Anton Keller Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the structure.
Today, Lockenhaus Castle is a vibrant cultural and excursion destination with a diverse range of offerings: visitors can explore the medieval architecture, participate in tours about the Templars, the Blood Countess Elisabeth Báthory, or the largest colony of whiskered bats in Central Europe. For children, there are exciting hands-on stations like the castle riddle rally or the exhibition "From Squire to Knight".
Additionally, concerts, knight's feasts, medieval festivals, and other events are held regularly. The castle uniquely combines history, nature, and experiences for the whole family.
