The Celtic Village Schwarzenbach – the experience community in the Bucklige Welt!

In the 2nd century BC, the Celts lived around Schwarzenbach in present-day Lower Austria in one of the largest urban-like settlements in the Eastern Alps region. It is believed that the inhabitants included both nobles and traders, craftsmen, and farmers. It is highly likely that the smelted iron ores from the Oberpullendorf Bay were processed further here. Trade with the processed raw materials is also said to have thrived here. The former oppidum – a type of settlement of that time with a city wall and an enclosed town center – is a significant testimony to the past.

Meanwhile, the University of Vienna has been conducting intensive archaeological excavations here for 14 years. A large part of the living and working spaces has been reconstructed. During guided tours, one can immerse themselves in the everyday life of the Celts and learn interesting facts about the history of the region.
