Opera in the Quarry
July 9 - August 23, 2025
Nestled in the wide, open landscape between the Leitha Mountains and Lake Neusiedl, the natural beauty of the Ruster Hills surprises visitors to the Neusiedler See region. Not without reason has UNESCO declared the region and the St. Margarethen quarry a World Heritage site.
Since 1996, the St. Margarethen quarry has been a leading venue in Europe for international opera enthusiasts. The location in the center of a historically significant cultural landscape promises a journey into unique experiential worlds. With the aim of providing popular and high-quality opera productions, the opera in the quarry equally attracts an enthusiastic audience as well as international opera stars and renowned musicians.
Opera Production 2025
THE FLYING DUTCHMAN by Richard Wagner
On the rugged coast between the fjords of Norway. The captain's daughter Senta fantasizes in melancholic daydreams about the eerie figure of a cursed seafarer condemned to eternal life, who can only come ashore every seven years to win the love of a woman. Such love and unwavering loyalty until death alone can free the undead from his curse.
No composer before Richard Wagner has so compellingly translated the roar of the raging sea into music, nor could anyone give such a vivid sound shape to the terror of a ghost ship. Additionally, the self-proclaimed innovator of opera created magnificent melodies, such as Senta's yearning ballad or Erik's pleading arias. The folksy tone, for instance in the helmsman's song or in the picturesque spinning room scene, is also not overlooked.
