100 Years of the Burgenland State Museum: Since October 3, 2026, the museum invites visitors to discover again with two new anniversary exhibitions at two locations in Eisenstadt. While the museum building in Museumgasse continues to be renovated, visitors can gain exciting insights into the history and collections of the state museum at the historic Leinner House and the Austrian Jewish Museum.
With the exhibition “The State Museum and its Collections”, the museum returns to its historical origin: the Leinner House on Ruster Straße in Eisenstadt, where the first Burgenland State Museum was opened on September 14, 1926. From October 3, 2026, selected treasures from 100 years of collecting activity will be presented here. Special exhibits include the skeleton of a cave bear, a mastodon tusk, archaeological finds, and a dance shoe of the famous dancer Fanny Elssler. The exhibition leads through the natural, artistic, and cultural history of Burgenland and showcases the impressive diversity of the museum collections.
The second anniversary exhibition “The State Museum and Judaism” can be seen at the Austrian Jewish Museum in Eisenstadt. It illuminates the significant role of Jewish personalities in the creation and development of the state museum. Central figures include the collector and patron Sándor Wolf, as well as the impact of Nazi persecution on the history of the museum.
Both exhibitions can be seen until September 26, 2027 and invite visitors to rediscover the Burgenland State Museum from different perspectives.
Guided Tours and Educational Offers
In conjunction with the exhibitions, the Burgenland State Museum offers guided tours and educational programs for adults, children, and groups. Selected collection objects, their stories, and the development of the museum are conveyed in an illustrative manner.
Note: The previous location of the Burgenland State Museum at Museumgasse 1–5 in Eisenstadt remains closed due to ongoing renovation work. The two anniversary exhibitions can be seen at the Leinner House in Eisenstadt and the Austrian Jewish Museum.
