Niederweiden Castle can look back on a long history. In 1685, Ernst Rüdiger Count von Starhemberg took over the lordship of Engelhartstettens with the village of Niederweiden. Around 1693 Count von Starhemberg commissioned the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to design a small hunting lodge not far from the dilapidated village of Niederweiden. In 1726 Prince Eugene of Savoy acquired the Engelhartstetten estate with the castle, which was referred to in contemporary sources as the "Engelhartstetten Hunting Lodge", from the widow Maria Josepha Countess of Starhemberg for 177,000 florins and connected it with the Hof estate. After the death of the art-loving general in 1736, his niece Anna Victoria of Savoy-Soissons inherited both castles and gave them to her Thuringian husband Joseph Friedrich of Saxe-Hildburghausen two years later on the occasion of their marriage. In 1755, Maria Theresa purchased both castles for 400,000 florins and gave them to her husband as a gift. The imperial couple had only 10 years together to use these properties for hunting, among other things. With the passing of Maria Theresa, Niederweiden gradually began its decline. Individual pieces of furniture were successively transferred either to Hof Palace or to Vienna. On the occasion of the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 1986, entitled "Prince Eugene and Baroque Austria", extensive restoration work also began at Niederweiden Palace, which saved the palace from final decay and still makes it a popular destination for visitors today.
