In the arcade courtyard of the central Burgenland Renaissance castle Kobersdorf, theater performances have been taking place since 1972. Professional acting, excellent visitor numbers, and a well-established reputation far beyond the country's borders have secured this stage a prominent position in the summer theater program. Ksch. Wolfgang Böck has been responsible for the artistic direction since October 2003 and is seen on stage as an actor.
Noises Off
by Michael Frayn
The Schloss-Spiele Kobersdorf looks joyfully behind the scenes in summer 2026, where “Noises Off” takes place: A comedy troupe is rehearsing their play – and already the last rehearsal before the premiere suggests something terrible! Some struggle with the props, others with the text. Doors stick and appearances are missed. Desperately, the director tries to bring his production to completion. But the true dramas unfold backstage. For during the ongoing performance, in addition to the usual timing, numerous relationship problems within the ensemble arise, a fatal whiskey bottle, and unexpected visitors. In the end, the focus shifts back to the stage. By the end of the tour in the province, not much is left of the original agreements. And with admirable improvisational talent, everyone involved saves themselves into the redemptive chaos.
When British author Michael Frayn observed the events of one of his early farces from the side stage, he said, “It was funnier from the back than from the front, and I thought one day I must write a farce from the back.” The idea for “Noises Off” was born! Since its London premiere in 1982, this absurd play has become one of the most successful comedies worldwide. Now, under the direction of Claus Tröger, it can finally be experienced at the Schloss-Spiele Kobersdorf – and of course, director Ksch. Wolfgang Böck also dives into the incomprehensible chaos.
