The Nittnaus family has been making wine in the town of Gols since the 17th century. Anita and Hans took over the family estate in the 1980ies and soon became leaders of the Austrian red wine movement.
Anita and Hans Nittnaus' philosophy is complete devotion to making wines reflecting the terroir of the area. The vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic methods; hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation and a low intervention approach to winemaking take centre stage.
The vineyards are situated on the northern shore of lake Neusiedl: the eastern side around the town of Gols (clay/loam/gravel/sand) and the western side around the town of Jois on the Leitha mountains(slate/limestone). The winery focuses on red wines and the main varieties are Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Merlot.
Since 2003 the winery has devoted itself to biodynamic farming and is organically certified since 2006. Creating wines in accordance with respect for nature is of utmost importance for the family. The wines represent their unique Pannonian style, characterized by elegance, complexity and longevity.
Starting 2019, the next generation (sons Martin and Andreas and niece Lydia) have started creating an additional line of natural wines, more experimental and unconventional. The family is a team of different opinions, characters, and visions but all unified in the strife to make the best authentic wine possible.
