Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival

Precious sounds in Central Burgenland

The internationally renowned Chamber Music Festival has been held in dreamy Lockenhaus, a densely wooded town in Burgenland, since 1982.

Here at the foot of the Geschriebenstein, the highest mountain in the state, chamber music is the ultimate pleasure. The venues Burg Lockenhaus, the Church of Saints Nicholas, and the castle give the town a special charm.

The festival created by Gidon Kremer not only offers a top-class lineup, it also has a very special approach.

The founding idea of relaxed intimacy lives on under the artistic direction of cellist Nicolas Altstaedt. Every year, music-loving Lockenhaus enthusiasts from all over the globe travel to the picturesque village to experience chamber music in the secluded heart of Europe with a unique intensity and proximity.

The program is announced just 48 hours before the performances. Visitors love the unique surprise factor, so there is always great enthusiasm for the program. The New York Times called the festival a “European cultural heritage site”. And every year the audience is as international as the euphoric press.
