Since the foundation of the cross-border national park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel in 1993, the reintroduction of grazing has been one of the most important instruments of land management. In the Sandeck-Neudegg conservation zone south of Apetlon and Illmitz the grey steppe cattle has been grazing since 1995. A herd of about 500 pieces, prevents the growth of reeds on the land according to the specifications of organic agriculture. The steppe cattle almost do not allow bushes or trees to grow and therefore create one of the most species-rich habitats in Europe. The range of specialities extends from fresh meat to special products such as "Nationalparkwürstel" (sausages) and "Nationalparkschinken" (ham).
