Concert experiences at Esterházy Palace

Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt is home to a wonderful baroque ballroom. It is named after Joseph Haydn and is one of the most beautiful and acoustically perfect concert halls in the world.

The repertoire consists of outstanding musical performances from the era of pre-classical and classical music, but also the Romantic period. There are also readings and seasonal programs.

Paul Esterházy (known as Prince Paul I from 1687) had the baroque ballroom built and adorned with opulent frescos in the second half of the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, it was changed as part of a neo-classical redesign, but still retained its excellent acoustics. It is regarded by music lovers as one of the beautiful concert halls in the world.

Some its structural principles have been the inspiration for other halls of this type . Legend has it that Joseph Haydn himself contributed to the special acoustics by allegedly insisting on removing the stone floor that had previously been there. Even if there is no historical evidence for this, your own ears will tell you that this was probably a wise decision. The combination of musical highlights, magnificent decor and impressive architecture inspires both performing artists and their audience.

Throughout the year, the historic venue hosts top-class classical concerts with established international stars and promising newcomers.

The popular picnic concerts take place during July and August, visitors can enjoy great classics in the Haydnsaal and also spend some time in the park. Before the concert or during one of the longer intervals, enjoy the contents of a pre-ordered picnic hamper or the deluxe picnic served in the magnificent setting of Esterházy Palace’s private park.
