The so-called "Anschluss Monument" in Oberschützen was inaugurated in 1939 and is considered a unique National Socialist monument of its kind in Austria. After the collapse of Nazi rule, parts of it were removed or destroyed, and demolition was repeatedly discussed but never realized. Meanwhile it is under monumental protection.
The construction was long disputed or tabooed - in 2018 the municipality of Oberschützen set up a working group to deal with the "Anschluss Monument" and advise the mayor Hans Unger. The historian Ursula Mindler-Steiner, who comes from Oberschützen, was commissioned to work out a project. Her concept "Place of thought, information and learning: 'Anschlussdenkmal' Oberschützen. Participation - Learning - Sustainability" is dedicated to the topic on different levels. The remembrance project is a part of it. The project is funded by the EU and EAFRD. Further information about the project can be found on the website.
