The area between Königshof and Bruckneudorf forms a unique biotope network with water bodies, reed zones, wetlands, and floodplain forests. The centerpiece is the 30-hectare nature reserve "Batthyanyfeld," a significant breeding and resting place for birds. Ornithologists have recorded around 120 bird species here. As a stepping stone between the March-Danube wetlands and Lake Neusiedl, it plays a central role in bird conservation.
Originally managed wetlands were leased in the 1960s for use as retention basins, which led to shrub encroachment and a decline in waterfowl. After re-naturalization measures starting in 1995 and the designation as a protected area in 1998, the area regained its ecological significance.
