Kobersdorf Palace has always been a place of cultural encounters.

The origins of the Palace go back to a Gothic castle complex from the beginning of the 13th century. Under the rule of various noble families, including the Habsburgs and, most recently, the Esterházy princes, the moated castle acquired its present day character: a fusion of Gothic, Renaissance and early Baroque - a medieval border castle that was transformed into an elegant 17th century palace complex.

In 1972, on the initiative of the municipality of Kobersdorf, the Schloss-Spiele Kobersdorf were established to stimulate tourism. The first Palace Plays took place from 7 to 9 July 1972.

Until 1987 Kobersdorf had been a place of experiments. In 1988, actor Rudolf Buczolich was appointed artistic director and propagated Kobersdorf as a centre for comedy, where lively, entertaining but also thought-provoking theatre was to be performed. From 1988 to 2003 the productions of the Buczolich era enlivened the cultural scene in Burgenland.

On 1 October 2003 the artistic direction of the Kobersdorf Palace Plays was transferred to Wolfgang Böck. In his very first season as the Kobersdorf director in 2004 he doubled the number of visitors to the summer theatre. His love for bicycles and vintage cars remained with him over the years: Thus Wolfgang Böck invites theatre-loving motorbike and vintage car drivers to take a trip to the Kobersdorf Palace Plays every year. The tours followed by a visit to the performance have become a tradition at the festival.
