Wildlife in Burgenland

Animals that you won’t find anywhere else

Burgenland not only has a variety of unique landscape features, you can also discover and observe extremely rare and endangered wild animals, such as the spoonbill or the tundra vole. And some very unusual animals that you would not expect to find here.

Older Austrians may still be familiar with the great bustard. It was in danger of extinction in the 80s and 90s, but the people of Burgenland helped save it. Although the great bustard reproduces very slowly even under ideal conditions, the population has been able to recover in the past 25 years.

And in addition to the better known bird species, Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park has some animal surprises in store, such as the white baroque donkey or impressive Hungarian Gray Cattle. Visitors will also find Przewalski's horses and the occasional water buffalo too.

The South Russian tarantula is fascinating, yet almost harmless, and nevertheless very impressive. It is relatively small, very shy, and its venom has hardly any adverse effect on humans.
